IMPORTANT NOTICE
JUNIOE SPRINT SERIES
CHANGE OF DATE AND VENUE

Junior sprints 23 February
moved to 9 March in Paarl

WCCU junior and senior sprint championships
16 March moved to Paarl

Dear WCCU juniors and parents,

It was decided at the last sprint race at Peninsula that the Paarl junior sprintsscheduled for 23 February 2019 were to be moved to 9 March 2019.
Reason for that was that most of the regular paddlers have made some previous arrangements and would not be able to attend the sprint race in Paarl scheduled for 23 February.

So, the sprint race for 23 February 2019 has been moved to 9 March 2019 in Paarl and also the following weekend of 16 March 2019 Paarl will be hosting the WCCU sprint champs.

Entry forms with more information will soon be distributed to clubs.

Thank you

Wayne August

Dear Paddling community

Over the weekend of 20 to 23 April there was a significant sewerage spill into Zandvlei.
Based on water quality readings taken on 23 & 26 April the CTM put out an advert closing the
Zandvlei waterbody for all water based activities.
In that same week a City Environmentalist said in an email to the ZPAAC Forum that the water quality
should improve markedly within one week, helped by the rainfall and spring tides.

PCC pushed and chased various folk at CTM this week trying to get up to date water quality readings published,
We were told that they should be available yesterday, but as of Friday morning nothing is available.

As organisers, we cannot wait any longer.
It would be irresponsible to hold the race with the CTM ban on water activities at Zandvlei still in place.

The Marina da Gama paddling festival will be postponed to a date still to be decided by WCCU.

Thanks to Fidelity ADT for their ongoing support of paddling events and thanks to all you Paddlers for your
patience and understanding.

Regards
Peninsula Canoe Club

TYGER VALLEY PURSUIT CHALLENGE

Course:

The Tyger Valley Canoe Club has access to a 4 HA body of water on which an eight lane 200m sprint course has been erected.

At the start and at the end of the course two half-circles of buoys have been installed which results in a perfect 600m loop around the “outside” of all the buoys.

Format:

Two teams of four paddlers will compete over three 600m laps, or over a distance of 1800m, with the two teams starting at opposite sides of the course.

The idea is to promote “slip riding” and the teams are required to work together in order to get the first three paddlers in a team over the finish line in the shortest possible time.

The event will work on a knock-out or elimination basis and teams will be ceded prior to racing in order to avoid two top teams competing against each other in the first round, thereby causing the early elimination of a potential top three finisher.

The loser in each knock-out event will go into a “plate” competition, ensuring that all teams will compete in an equal number of races and even the two slowest teams will be involved in competitive racing up to the end.

Entry fee: R50 per paddler

Prizes: “Cup” competition (All first round winners)

1st prize R500 per team

2nd prize R300 per team

3rd prize R200 per team

“Plate” competition (All first round losers)

1st prize R400 per team

2nd prize R250 per team

3rd prize R150 per team

Lucky draw: R500

Floating Draw” One lucky winner will have an one in ten opportunity to win the floating draw. At the first event this will be R500 and this amount will be “carried over”, with R500 added to the floating amount, up and until someone is successful in winning the total amount, after which we will start with R500 again.

There is R1000 in the floating lucky draw at present.

Dates: Event 1 20 January 2018

Event 2 17 February 2018

Event 3 10 March 2018

Registration time: 13h00 to 13h45

Race Briefing: 13h45

Race starting time: 14h00

Important Notice:

If there are insufficient teams the “Plate” competition will be scrapped and all teams will compete against each other on a points system.

team Pursuit a

Seriously short fun racing- see overview below.

Teams of 4 club members each will race each other head to head in a pursuit knock-out event over 2400 m (4 x 600 m laps). Two teams will start opposite sides of the center line of the coarse and race each other in an anti-clockwise direction. The idea is that the team members assist each other with slip riding. One member of the team is allowed to fall off and the 3rd team member past the center line after 2400 m will determine the position of the team. It is an easy straight forward concept which does not involve any complicated time keeping. Only a winner and a loser. The teams will proceed according to the knock-out table which guarantees each team at least 3 races.

Road directions to Bergriver Dam

NB! The race is at the Robertsvlei side of the dam, and NOT where the dam wall is built!

a) Langpad teerpad: follow the road (R45) into Franschhoek, until you come to T-junction at Huegenot Monument. Turn R and 400m further turn R again at Robertsvlei turn off. Follow this beautiful winding road until you get the Glen Wood turn off after 3.8 km. Turn R onto gravel road and only 20m further turn L. Follow this gravel road until you get to the gate after 1.4 km. Drive straight through and look ahead for the race officials. Please park on the sides of the road.
b) Kortpad grondpad: follow the road (R45) towards Franschhoek. Exactly 3.4km past the junction with the Victor Versterpad (R301) and entrance to the dam wall, you take the Robertsvlei turn off to the R. (It is soon after the La Motte station signs on your L) The road soon turns to gravel, so slow down! After 5.1 km you turn R (20m before the road makes a T-junction with the tar road) Follow this gravel road until you get to the gate after 1.4 km. Drive straight through and look ahead for the race officials. Please park on the sides of the road.

Nekkies-Alfies

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Unfortunately the start of the Nekkies-Alfies race will have to shift down river, because Nekkies resort is booked out.

The race will start at the Worcester pump station, behind the municipal dump site.

Fanie will put up boards at the turnoff to the dump site.

Directions:

From Nekkies, drive over the Breede river bridge, for about 3km to the Villiersdorp turn off (R43).

Turn right and travel till you get the municipal dump on your right, which is roughly opposite the back road into Worcester.

Turn right into that gravel road and just before the gate turn left and follow the gravel road around the dump to the river.

The race will be about 3km shorter, but will cut out the 1st weir, which is now too dangerous to shoot.

No cars may be left at the river, as the gate will be locked after the start.

Race notes
ALFIES – ROBERTSON: Thanks Ian Glass

1) Start down stream of Alfies bridge

2) About 800m after the start river splits Left and Straight – must go Straight

3) Halfway mark is La Chasseur weir – compulsory portage on RHS.

4) Head for “V” in hills and get to Goeree Weir Can go either left or right of the island above the weir– paddle up to the drop shoot or portage when low.
Hint: when approaching the weir aim for the gap in the trees below the weir as this is where the channel is.
DO not go far left!

5) Enter channels below weir – at split go LEFT.

6) After rapid/wave-train hit the flats and river does a gentle curve to the right.

7) Look for a BIG DEAD gumtree on RH bank in the 3rd pool. Opposite this tree GO LEFT. Do not carry on straight on the main river – dangerous weir. If you miss this Left turn go back and look for it. DO NOT GO ON STRAIGHT.

8) In LH sneak you come to a old weir – stay far right then a low level bridge – portage on RHS and put in just below the bridge. You can’t paddle under this bridge.

9) At the end of this sneak the main river joins from the RHS and its 800m to the end at Silverstrand Stroom Campsite and finish.

3) Hyacinth block 1 – portage on the right only. Run 150m on farm jeep track
5) Hyacinth block 2 – portage on the right – dont need to climb the bank (1km before Zonqwas bridge)
5) take main river left after putting in at Hyacinth block 2 (sneak is a bit cluttered)
6) Hyacinth block 3 – 100m after Zonqwas bridge – quick portage left or right (option 2 – portage at bridge and run along right bank)
7) @ 25km (Abbeys Alley) – just before blue/White drums river turns right – the sneak going straight is blocked so look for the main flow going left into Abbeys Alley.

Saturday 7th May

The annual ADT Marina Race will take place on the 7th May at Peninsula Canoe Club at 9am. This is typically the season kick-off and one of the better attended events on the calendar so make sure you don’t miss it.

It also showcases how important sponsors are to our sport as this race has one of the largest array of prizes on the calendar….thanks to ADT.

COURSE….as close as possible to the coming marathon champs course on the same stretch of water….just no portage. How cool is that for your training.
