Dear Western Cape Paddlers,

Your Union has an employment opportunity for those of you whom may be interested.

After many years our secretary, Laura Van Heerden has decided to open a new chapter in her life.
Her dedication and behind the scenes work will be sorely missed and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Thank you Laura, we hope to see you on the river banks!

This leaves us with a few decisions to make in a relatively short period. The jury is out as to how we should manage this but the current thoughts are:
1) to find a single person to manage this position
2) or to divide the tasks up among few people who have the spare time on their hands.

If you are interested in offering your services please forward your contact details to secretary@wccanoeunion.co.za.
Positions filled will be remunerated accordingly.

Yours in canoeing
Richard Kohler
WCCU Executive Secretary

Eric Farringer (Chairman, WCCU)

I was privileged to attend the SA Marathon Champs hosted by WCCU  and Peninsula Canoe Club. Let me start by saying that the Lions share of the work for this event was left in the capable hands of the Peninsula Canoe Club. Rob and Lis Hart, Brian Keeling, Pete Cole, Paul Lange ,Stu MacLaren, Kenny Rice, Michelle   vd. Walt,  Andrew van Osch, Karen Duelsberg ,Peter vd  Westhuizen, Mark Preyser and many other rose to challenge ! Well done ! Many thanks to Prescient for their generosity!!

The vibe for the event began as soon as you entered the parking lot and witnessed the blue and white of the Prescient banners blowing in the breeze. As you drew closer the music and commentary by Dave McCloud added to the excitement. Then, of course , the contact with friends and acquaintances from all over South Africa began. Add to that the excitement of watching some really top notch marathons and you have a heady mix. What a finish for the Seniors with Henk, Brandon and Andy dicing it out until the last meter!

Paul Lange did a brilliant job organising the volunteers on and before race day. I was on the list of volunteers and received about 20 whatsapp notices as the volunteers were allocated their tasks. The officials were issued with distinctive “Prescient” hats and pen and paper by Paul. Go pro footage was on hand for review of the put ins as was the watchful eye of Giel on put ins and Lisa Scot on take outs with others , including Rob Maclean covering the buoys and other turns . Laura van Heerden helped with the registration of the paddlers.

Prescient Investment Management (021 700 3600)  provided generous funding including free lunches for the Development paddlers and accommodation was provided for several of the top paddlers. Fanie and Rob did a great job of starting the races despite a problematic back wind. Janine and Else were on have to help John Oliver with the time keeping.

The race ran smoothly and was well organised . It was a job we can all be proud of. Many thanks to Peninsula Canoe Club and the many volunteers that made this possible.

RACE REPORT: GOUDA – TRAIN BRIDGE

The Paarl Lady Loch Race was moved to Gouda – Trainbridge this Saturday.
Though water levels were low the river was easy to paddle without a portage or damaging paddles on the river bed. Though normally a B grade river, because of the forgiving water level , and thorough preparation removing obsticals it was considered safe for a C grade novice race.

Fify seven participants enjoyed getting onto a flowing river through one of the most beautiful sections of the Berg. ! The race was won by Heinrich Scholms followed closely by Ernest van Riet. Third place went to Gert van Dieventer who made a cameo appearance while on vacation from his base in the UK.

Of the fifty seven entrants about 27 were novices. All finished and most “shot” Blackrock which was very forgiving at this low level. Paarl had the most novices entered Wayne August arrived in force and paddled with his youngsters. It was great seeing so many young faces on the river. Ceridwen Salisbury (CTY) had an excellent race and was the first novice in and second female. Allisandro Passerini (Prl) was the first male novice in.

The river is quite open to Bridgetown and quite easily paddled.. Many of the more experienced contestents carried on to Bridgetown.

The first Riebeek Cellars Novice Race was a resounding success with 90 paddlers taking place. The UCT team put in a great effort and arrived with 50 paddlers , more than half of whom were novices. They won the prize for the most novices and collected their 24 bottles of wine courtesy of Riebeek Cellars. A big thank you to Riebeek cellars for this prize and to Arniston Infusion for their contribution as well. Water levels were low but easily paddled without portages (other than the first weir) or having to get out of your boat. Even a K3 made it down.
The next of the Riebeek Cellars Novice Series takes place on the !4th of March. So any other team wishing to win  the 24 bottle prize then is your chance.

Welcome back to what we hope will be a fantastic 2015/2016 paddling season.
Welcome to our brand new website after our previous one was irreparably hacked last year! This also comes with a new administrative contact e-mail. The website address is www.wccanoeunion.co.za, the e-mail secretary@wccanoeunion.co.za. We will be phasing out the other e-mail addresses in the next few months.

Check out the calendar – there are a few great startup races – not too strenuous, warm sunshine and great water for this time of year so make an effort to get onto the water early and kick start your season. Reregistration for the new season will begin in mid-February for 1 April – 2014 registrations are valid until 31 March 2015.

Race results for the recent Breede Summer series and West Coast Challenge are available on the results page for download.
